are there any weight loss benefits to bikram yoga? i am going to start taking classes and was wondering what some of the benefits are besides loosing water weight temporarily.

Bikram is definitely a great way to lose weight. It’s actually the only way that’s worked for me. So far, I’ve dropped 2 dress sizes. I go about 2-3x/week and do no other exercise. I’ve toned my arms/legs/stomach and lost serious inches all over. I feel better & I look better. I would say I started to see benefits about a month in to the practice and could really notice some changes 3 months in. But now I feel like I notice a difference with every class. I’ve seen way more results than I ever did at a gym or pilates (I used to be a big pilates person). The cardio is amazing & it’s a great way to lose weight & get your cardio workout in without pounding away (like in running). Also eventually you’ll find Bikram to be fairly meditative & calming.

Things You Must Know Before Starting Bikram Yoga

So what happens in a Bikram yoga class and what are the benefits? If you watch a yoga video or join a class you will see poses being practiced by the yogis. People will be sweating quite extremely and yet still continue to practice. This is all part of the way Bikram yoga has been designed. You will see the 26 postures done in sequence, each one being repeated twice. This kind of yoga is usually practiced in a hot room, hence the name 'Hot Yoga'. The heat and subsequent sweating increases the effectiveness of Bikram yoga.

You will notice in class that each step is practiced very slowly. This is not like an aerobics class with quick movements but requires deep focus and concentration. It's important to keep your fluids up and drink lots of water as the class usually runs for 90 minutes.

All people of all age groups can start doing Bikram yoga. The heat may be a factor for older people or young kids so speak to a qualified professional before beginning lessons. It's often a good idea to bring along a small towel to wipe your face and also a larger towel to put over your mat to stop it from becoming slippery, or otherwise take an anti-slip mat.

If you can not attend a class you can watch Bikram yoga on video. Most of the time enough detail is shown so that you can find the right clothes and copy the poses that they perform.

As this yoga is practiced in a heated room you should take this into consideration with the clothes you bring. This means wearing a minimum amount of clothing and avoid wearing clothes that will cause you to overheat. That being said, pick something that you will feel comfortable and confident wearing in front of other practitioners.

For the men it's best just to wear shorts and a tank top. It's best not to wear full sleeve shirts or long pants that may restrict your movement doing the poses. Cotton is best as it will absorb sweat easily.

For the women, tank tops, shorts or leotards are usually worn. Also look for cotton clothing, as this will help to absorb sweat during the workout.

Keep these tips in mind next time you attend Bikram Yoga, wear light clothing, keep water levels up, watch out for slippery mats and have fun.

At a tender age of four, he started to apply this ancient spiritual routine with the country’s notable culturist at that period, Bishu Ghosh who is the sibling of Paramahansa Yogananda, initiator of Self- Realization Fellowship based in Los Angeles.

Before Bikram Choudhury was able to come up with bikram yoga, he was constantly performing this primordial religious practice for a minimum of four to six hours in a daily basis at Ghosh’s College. When he was seventeen, Choudhury met an accident that inured his knee. Doctors predicted that he could never walk again but he remained optimistic amidst the diagnosis.

He went back to his alma mater to receive total remedy where six months after, he was completely healed. Today, he now travels all over the United States giving workshops in various academes.

Controversy

One of the biggest issues in the history of bikram yoga was the period when Bikram Choudhury aggressively asserted that the poses in Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Class were under his copyright. This made a lot of noise among Americans who have been observing the ancient spiritual routine.

There were also others who objected with the manner Choudhury dealt with his associates especially when he ventured into franchising studios. However, with all the statements thrown, his conception continues to find a niche in these contemporary times.

There are many different benefits to Hot Bikram yoga, not just in terms of physical benefits, but also mental benefits, such as increased relaxation. In addition, Bikram poses help individuals to increase the flexibility in their spine so that they can have a better range of motion in every direction. The Bikram poses also help to increase circulation since toxins are released from the muscles and knots that once inhibited circulation through them are released. Unlike high impact sports that give a cardio workout such as jogging, Bikram postures provide a great cardio workout without the stress to the various joints and muscles. Types of Poses

Bikram yoga consists of twenty six Bikram poses that are performed in a highly heated room, often up to one hundred five degrees Fahrenheit. The heated room helps the body to get into deeper positions, increasing flexibility. It also causes the individual to have to concentrate more precisely since the conditions are adverse and his body is sweating profusely, adding to the distraction. The sweating allows more toxins to be released from the body, so in addition to lengthening muscles and letting toxins out of them into the blood stream, the toxins are also allowed to escape through the enlarged pores through sweating.

The poses start with Pranayama breathing which is a very precise form of deep breathing that is done on while standing with precise arm movements with every breath to open up the body and get ready for the next pose. The second poses require the individual to bend sideways, forward and backward, loosening the spine. The third pose involves a squatting motion, done with care of form so that the knees are not injured.
